授業の目的

The central goals of this course are:
To enhance reading skills through intensive and extensive practice.
To expand high-frequency vocabulary for daily use.
To improve listening comprehension with diverse audio materials.
To develop confident conversational and small talk abilities.
To master basic presentation organization and delivery.
To cultivate independent learning habits and strategies

教育内容

This class will introduce a variety of different themes including philosophy, science, and current events. These topics will be covered in a variety of ways using video, audio, and conventional presentation. All materials and media utilized with be authentic and relevant to students’ academic context.
Technology will feature heavily in the classroom as students use phone applications to play interactive games, complete assignments, and practice extensive reading. We will also be reading in class every day using the X-reading website, which features 1000`s of English novels designed for learners at all levels.
Students will work individually, in pairs, or in groups as they participate in a variety of activities and tasks.

教育方法

[All classes will be held in person and on campus]
Students will begin each class with short periods of
(a) Extensive Reading
(b) High-frequency vocabulary practice
(c) Intensive listening practice
Following those tasks, we will switch to a daily topic and language point. We will conduct both partner and group exercises that allow students to practice their speaking and listening while incorporating target forms.
Students will be working on two important projects. One group presentation and one solo speaking test.
The class will utilize Google Classroom for assignment and grade management. Outside of the classroom students are encouraged to email their instructor with any questions.

The instructor will direct all activities and provided both oral and written feedback when appropriate, in class, and through the university LMS system.

準備学修(予習・復習)

[Study time required outside of lessons: 15 hours]
Students will be required to review content studied in class; study required vocabulary and concepts; read their graded readers, complete written supplementary tasks; and prepare for their speaking tasks.
All materials and instructions will be listed in the LMS and students are required to check the LMS before each class and following each class to see what they need to prepare or review.
Time for preparation and homework should be an average of 1/2 hour of academic work and 1/2 hour of extensive reading per class.

All students have access to the online English B course on the learning platform Reallyenglish. You must login to this platform and see what materials are available. You are encouraged to complete the activities in this online course particularly if you lack confidence in your listening skills. Reallyenglish will also help you improve your knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, which will help you express your ideas in English.

By the end of the course students will have (a) improved their reading skills (b) enhanced their English vocabularies, (c) developed their analytical writing skills (d) sharpened their critical thinking abilities, (e) gained valuable presentation and analytical listening skills and (f) improved their general spoken English fluency.
