授業の目的

The objective of the spring-summer semester of the annual course is designed, first of all, to help students improve their academic English speaking and writing abilities to the stage where they can, both verbally and in a written way, deliver their ideas much more confidently than in their high school days, and, therefore, to give their potentials as many various chances to use the language actively.
In addition, it is expected that students have a positive outlook on the English-speaking community, academically or professionally, where they are likely to study and work in the future.

教育内容

This course focuses on encouraging students to get involved in various communicative activities to finally form their foundation for larger-scale out-put tasks, such as a persuasive formal presentation or voluminous essay writing, A certain level of listening will be needed as the basis for speaking, and that of reading will be required for writing, as 4 skills are always strategically practised as inseparable elements from the integrity of one language.

教育方法

【この授業は全て対面で実施します】
This course takes advantage of active learning features throughout the course. Students are expected to get involved in a lot of practical language use in areas such as reaction to the aural & visual information, e.g. video watching, active listening, pronunciation practice, vocabulary & grammar in context, peer-to-peer instruction, informal talk in groups/pairs, discussion, public speech, paragraph writing, essay writing and peer feedback. Their enthusiastic participation in classwork will be highly appreciated.
How to give feedback: the instructor will give feedback, orally or in writing, to the students in the right way at the right moment, like giving instructional comments, individually or generally, to any kind of speaking and writing activities.

準備学修(予習・復習)

【授業時間外に必要な学習の時間:15 時間】
Students are expected to always do some mono-lingual active work, rather than bilingual translation. What should be done as preparation for the later classes will be mentioned in every class, and students are expected to work on it for a sufficient time. A minimum of around 1 hour of self-study as preparation is needed for each regular book-based in-class learning. But this is not the case when there is some presentation/writing assignment coming shortly. Similarly, students should do enough revision by checking what is not understood and by listening to audio materials repeatedly.

到達目標

1) Students will be able to form their own opinions through listening and reading with the help of exploring minds, which is the base for their critical speaking and writing.
2) Students will not be able to listen to various types of talks only for listening comprehension, but rather for finding out expression phrases they will use themselves for their own talk.
3) Students will be able to find themselves speaking more freely, more confidently and more productively than when just reading aloud written things.
4) Students will also be able to write in English more promptly, efficiently and productively than when just doing word-for-word translation.

成績評価の方法と基準

There is no final exam. In-class activities and submitted assignments will be used to evaluate the students.
Speech & Presentation (30%), discussion & class participation (15%), writing (45%), mini-exams(10%)
There will be no make-ups for mini-exams or group activities, so attendance at each class is crucial.
Plagiarism, ghostwriting and translation by a 3rd party, paid or non-paid, and any AI-generated items are all intolerable.
Basically, there will be no make-up for any mini-tests or group activities which are evaluated with scores.
Reallyenglish(online self-learning system) is recommended for self-study, but it is not included in the items to be evaluated.

学生へのメッセージ(その他注意等)

Try to expose yourselves to English use outside the class as well. Language is more than a subject, more than a tool. How many tongues i.e. persons, how many perspectives will you be able to have?
