授業の目的

The objective of the fall-winter semester course is, not only to encourage students to expand their English abilities much further but also to give them an exploring mind to find by themselves what kinds of expressions are effective and what else are not successful and to advance to the stage where they can convince their colleagues of their original opinions, in either a spoken or written form.

教育内容

Students are assisted to get more used to natural-sounding and effective expressions, both orally and literally, in addition to grammatical correctness, so that they can choose the fittest expressions for their own ideas. Via plenty of peer-instruction and the teacher's comments on speaking and writing training, they will be given enough information and will be making the best of it in various communicative experiments. Finally, they will be guided to accomplish a 3-minute presentation and a 500- word essay.

教育方法

【この授業は全て対面で実施します】
In addition to a minute paper and frequent feedback on both speaking and writing activities, the instructor will propose more advanced learning methods, such as self-analysis of their way of speaking with recording tools, search for recommendable presentations on the websites, and instructive peer evaluation. Continuous instruction of vocabulary and grammar will be given for speaking and writing purposes and will be designed to be used on the spot.
How to give feedback: The instructor will often give general comments to the whole class and individual advice to each student after any activity, sometimes bilingually. Like the spring semester, active learning will be the base.

準備学習(予習・復習)

【授業時間外に必要な学習の時間:15時間】
Students are expected to always do some mono-lingual active work, rather than bilingual translation. What should be done as preparation for the next classes will be mentioned in every class, and students are expected to work on it for a sufficient time. A minimum of around 1 hour of self-study as review and preparation is needed for each regular book-based in-class learning. But this is not the case when some presentation/writing assignments are coming closer.

到達目標

1) Through various motivational learning processes with the final goal of a 3-minute presentation, students will be able to enjoy speaking of some academic and social matters with confidence to would-be international colleagues.
2) Through the gradual learning process towards a successful 500 word academic essay writing, students will be able to get their opinions delivered publicly in well-expressed natural English essays on some academic and social issues.

成績評価の方法と基準

There is no final exam. In-class activities and submitted assignments will evaluate the students.
Speech & Presentation (30%), discussion & class participation (15%), writing (45%), e-learning (10%)
There will be no make-ups for mini-exams or group activities, so attendance at each class is crucial.
Plagiarism, ghostwriting and translation by a 3rd party, paid or non-paid, and any AI-generated items are all intolerable.

When you are listening, you can come across a number of good expressions, which you probably want to mimic. When you are reading, you can chance on a wealth of smart wording, which you desire to imitate. Just follow your aspirations.
