This programme is designed for nursing students in their first year of study who already have a good command of general English. It aims to satisfy the specific language needs required for participating in medical practice and improve their confidence in speaking and writing English through a variety of activities.
The course mainly focuses on developing academic language skills with special emphasis on experimental research writing techniques and scientific oral presentation strategies; however, sessions will also be devoted to medical terminology such as word formation, key terminology and Greek/Latin prefixes/suffixes. The topics will be adjusted to the students' relevant pre-clinical studies. Students are expected to familiarise both formal and informal measures of communicating in English for nursing activities; use basic functions and grammar needed to communicate in a professional environment; extend basic medical vocabulary especially those used in medical/clinical communication.

1. Introduce the concepts of medical terminology.
2. Provide a straightforward guide to the conventions of scientific writing.
3. Through model texts the students learn how to make correct choices about rhetorical form, grammatical structure and key vocabulary.

Students will be encouraged to prepare for subsequent classes by brainstorming. Also students will be encouraged to review by completing reflective tasks.
